what Grant said is correct. Dodge was the first to have a disengageable front axle thru the transfer case. Ford and GM made 4x4 trucks during WW2 but did not offer until the late fifties to the public. I read somewhere (cant verify where though) that Dodge leased the transfer case patent rights to everyone else for years unttil patent expiration. And the first Jeep some say was 1/2 ton Dodge Dodge 4x4 which pre dates the Jeep as we know it today. One story goes that Dodges were called Jeeps thru 1941 and Jeeps were called Peeps. Then in 42 when the Dodge 3/4 ton cammoand car came out the Jeep named was given to the peeps and the dodges were called Beeps (Big Jeeps). All hear say though. Jeep owners dont really like it when you say "Hey Nice Peep!" ;/)
