Crankshaft end play can easily be measured.
With a Rubber Mallet, TAP the front of the crankshaft towards the rear. Mount a magnetic dial indicator on the front of the engine with the dial indicator probe touching the end of the crankshaft. Place a bar behind the crank pulley and just ease it forward. Read the end play on the dial indicator. Remove probe from crank, tap the crank rearward, the replace the dial indicator and measure once again.
