Ed...you're going to see it soon because even all your new bridges are being powder coated.
You see that window you posted...that's cheap polyester powder coat applied to bare smooth steel. The coating process on that window likely cost $20 or less.
As with any coating...powder coat needs a profile to adhere. You can't just apply it to smooth new steel that's still got flux on welds etc like they do at the trailer plant to save a buck.
Go look at a lawn chair at Costco...then go look at the gas tank on a Harley & tell me there's not a big difference in quality.
I don't know this for fact...but I'd be willing to wager that a 2010 Dodge 3500...all frame & chassis components are powder coated.
I don't think we're debating the same thing here...you're discussing cheap-ass money saving coatings & I'm discussing high quality powder coatings that are applied to virtually all new vehicles...including wheels...& even those coatings are crappy as compared to what's available.
I can assure you...they won't be powder coating the Golden Gate Bridge if they think they're going to have it all peeling off in 2 years :)
