Chains were still in use to drive a tandem on offroad trucks into the 60s, and far less problematic than geared interaxels.
If the stuff you have is what I'm thinking, when you jab a thumbnail in or try to you'll find the wax more akin to sealing wax than parafin. It's very similar to the blocks used on old railcars.
