Marty,
I have seen powdercoating fail on many things here on the NE seashore. Boat trailers, doors, lawnmowers, etc. Yes proper prep is essential, but I have yet to see any powdercoating last. There is no bonding to the metal. It is plastic powder melted to cover what ever its being treated. In addition, the coating tends to be thinner along edges,,,like painting....which predisposes to early wear and ultimately failure.
The NE shore is rich in salt. I remember my father pointing out the salt on the surface of the tomato leaves as a fog burned off late one summer day. The leaves had a find white coating. Indeed in a typical fog, while riding your bicycle you can taste the salt in the air.
Good paint lasts. Bad paint does not. No powdercoating that I have seen has been able to last. NONE.
Yes there may be some that can; but I have yet to see one...
Eddie
ps My Sanderson 318 ceramic coated headers rusted and peeled the first year here!
