Paul,
The Buckstop bumper you're talking about...they don't even brush the mill scale off those things before coating them...they can't...nobody would buy them they'd be so expensive! :)
In order to sandblast those bumpers properly & use Epoxy based powder coating...it would add probably $200 to the costs & as much as you or I would pay it...most won't.
It's just like painting...how will that PPG Epoxy hold up for you if we just spray it on the Buckstop bumper...no prep..no etching?
That's what most of these shops are doing.
I usually use Epoxy as well...that's only because the blasting & labor is free for me.
Do I think it's a better coating than good powder coating?...I'd have to say no.
I've told this story before but 20 years ago I restored a 66 Corvette. I had a bunch of steering parts powder coated & realized after that one of the pieces should have been left bare cast steel. I tried blasting it off...no chance. I tried heating it with a torch & then blasting it...forget it...it wasn't coming off.
I ended up throwing it out & buying a new part.
Epoxy is good...don't get me wrong...Epoxy is very good & very durable but so is powder coat & there are TONS of reputable shops.
I kind of doubt there's a good one in Schroon Lake though :)
