The federal Renewable Fuel Standard sets a minmum percentage of renewable fuel that we use each year. The purpose is to ensure independent, domestic fuel producers can rely on a floor in the demand for their product. Without such a floor for demand, all OPEC has to do is drop fuel prices for a season or two, and small American business are wiped out, and we continue our addiciton to foregin oil.
