Steve,
Riding on the beach will require the fattest tire you think will look OK. Years ago in the PowerWagon Advertiser there were a couple of articles about some fishermen in Alaska that drove their PW's out onto the sand bars and sent nets out into the costal waters...(called Haulseining here in Eastern LI. NY). I believe they used old airplane tires..25 plys!
As a child I watched them do the same thing here. The PW's and Fords all had capstan winches in the back, and fat tires. They would send a dory with a 1/2 mile of netting out through the waves. The net would be set in an arc and the dory would return. The trucks at either end would winch in the net and the fish would be beached, and the dory filled with the catch and they would then go to the market, the fish covered in ice.
I have Dick Cepek Fun Country Radial tires, 16.5 x 38.5 x 15.5 on Stockton wheels with tubes. The tires are only about 35" tall destite the claimed 38.5" height. Unless you are doing serious dune climbing tread is unnecessary, as many of the trucks used ribbed implement tires that had no tread...similiar to airplane tires.
I run 20 pounds of air in the front and 15 in the back; you'll probably need 20 in the back with the extra weight in the rear.
Best of luck,
Eddie
