It could have been a factory defective part, wouldn’t be the first time. If parts continue to break, then a swap may be the right choice.

During the last two weeks, I helped my neighbor take out a Mexican or fig palm depending who you talk to, that had about a 3 foot diameter base. At the time, I had my PTO off the FFPW truck, so we used the truck to pull it using a snatch block tied to an Oak tree. We tried ½ inch nylon rope, broke it three times and after having a beer, I said enough is enough an we stripped the cable off the drum, rigged it and pulled it. The pulling was done on the street in 4x4. It took about a dozen pulling attempts, before we got most of the stump out with the front/rear tires spinning and digging into the pavement on the street each time. Based on this, I know the tracta axles/knuckles on the M37/PW are plenty strong. I do believe over time parts get stressed from lack of maintenance and will eventually break. This may be the case for yours and others.

The snatch block was low on the oak making the rear frame force downward adding additional traction to the rear wheels. In doing this, it was amazing how easy the 230 spun the wheels on payment with engine speed just off idle. But considering the 230 builds its max torque at 1200 rpm, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I’m more impressed with the truck each time I use it. The whole thing took about four hours in between beer and water.
