3rd gear puts more strain than any other on the intermediate bearing. The bearing is right there, next to 3rd.

Unless it is just at that point that the whole gear train's vibrations equals mre than the sum of the individual part's vibrations...

Perhaps filling with 140wt gear oil will quiet it down some. But it means you have to learn to shift two different trannys- the cold one, and the warm one. And I don't know if it's a good idea in cold weather zones...
