According to a positively glowing article in the L.A. Times that talks about what a boon this is for the hard-up wrecking yards and scrap dealers, they give the engines a "lethal injection of sodium silicate". Sodium silicate is an interesting substance. When heated it swells up into a silica foam that is a heat-proof adhesive as well as abrasive. It's used in stove cement, fireproof paint, and used to be used to preserve eggs. I can easily believe it will wreck an engine in short order.
From everything I can read in the mainstream press, Cash For Clunkers is a great idea for the economy, for workers, and for the environment simply because it's Obama's idea. I'm sure if Bush had come up with it, they would have exactly the opposite opinion. Currently, the Boy Wonder can do no wrong. No matter what the opinion poll question, Obama scores 60% positive on it. Last year the 60% of the people disapproved of the Supreme Court. This year 60% of the people approve of it. It's the same court with the same judges, but they like it now that Obama is president.
