Something similar was happening to my chebby van, the battery kept dying and it wouldn't start like this as well. turned out the positive battery cable was broken inside the insulation and would make intermitinet contact. this is after a new starter and new battery. the cable is very long and the break was far enough away from the battery and starter so I didn't notice it.
