WTF? 1/2-16 thread

I was trying to pull a bearing off a long shaft (I shouldn't have, because it won't come off that way, but that's beside the point). I have a nifty high-powered hydraulic puller so figured I'd use that. The extension rods that came with it were too short, but I thought I'd just use a couple lengths of all-thread rod. I get the all-thread cut and the ends cleaned up, and it won't screw into the holes in the bearing puller. It turns out the bearing puller holes and the rods that come with the gear puller set are 1/2-16 thread, midway between UNC and UNF(SAE). They are definitely not metric. All the dimensions of things in the manual are given in inches, and the holes and puller rods fit my 16 TPI thread gauge perfectly. The screw diameter is just a hair under 1/2". I realize this thing was made in Taiwan, but it's all made to "English" dimensions. What on Earth were they thinking to use an oddball thread pitch like that? It's not UNC (1/2-13), it's not SAE (1/2-20), and it's not even Whitworth (1/2-12). MSC lists 1/2-16 taps so they must be used on something (other than bearing pullers), but I can't imagine where you would need 1/2-16 and 1/2-20 or 1/2-13 wouldn't do.
