The guy who owned it most of its life told me that he changed the shaft to the brake drum because he noticed it rotates faster than the regular output shaft. He did not say he modified it, just that he checked and verified that the shaft and bearings are just as beefy on the brake drum side. I do know that the rear end is from a '43 ambulance. Would that have had 5.89s or something else? He said he changed pumpkins to go a bit faster, then the drive shaft to the brake drum for even more speed (50-ooooh). I guess I will now check to see if it does go faster at the brake drum shaft versus the normal output and report back. It is nice to be able to go 50 mph without redlining the engine, but obviously it is working harder at any rpm, so it really depends on what you are using the truck for. I haul wood and gravel occasionally, and when at or over gross weight it is a dog in forth gear. This forum is great!
