It is an odd thread/diameter combination, so you can't just use a longer bolt.

Grease all the parts first, then hand start. Make sure the key is started into the key way, if not, tap it back off and get the key in properly, and try again. then use a mallet to get it on. Or the block of wood to cushion a hammer. Oncwe it is on far enough for the threads of the 'nut' to start by oh,,, 3/8", grease the threads on the 'nut', and screw it in with the handcrank. Or a big socket, if you have one. That should pull it on the rest of the way.

That's the way I do it.
