If Fiat was smart, what they would do is put all that ancient, if "proprietary", information in the public domain and let some volunteer group, museum, etc do with it as they see fit. If they want to put it on-line for free or sell build cards or whatever, it's not going to impact Chrysler/Fiat's balance sheet today. In other words, Fiat has a lot more to worry about than maintaining control of 50 year old data that's only of interest to collectors, isn't worth any real money, and is a distraction for them to deal with.

A lot of times a big company will keep doing all kinds of piddly little peripheral things just because that's what they've always done, but when times are tough, they need to jettison as much of that extraneous stuff as possible. Hopefully they'll jettison the Chrysler Archives to some worthy group and not just to the shredder, but one can never tell what foolishness will happen when a new batch of bean-counters arrives.
