No I wouldn't weld anything to the frame if I were you.
Paul's method will definitely haul the biggest load & with his Cummins install...he's capable of hauling a big load! :)
My method hauled a 10K lb load without any trouble & no frame welding. It literally took an hour to fabricate & bolt it on.
The only way it could ever let go would be if it pulled the whole rear crossmember out of your truck...I think not with a 230 :)
Ordinarily I'd prefer the lowered receiver...just not on a vintage truck. Not visually pleasing to my eye.
