I made the plate wide enough to also attach at the inner bumperet points so it's tied into the brace for the rear cross member to the frame side rails. I also had a plate that went over the cross member as my hitch was high mounted, and I ended up drilling two 3/4" holes through it and the top of the dross member and placed a extra brace in the cross member to spread the load.
I've not pulled any trailers, but pulled out others, and with it.
