Robert:
On my WC53 I placed high density plastic spacers on the top of the roof ribs. I used a couple of screws to hold them in place. This will keep a slight curve to the top and will keep water from puddling on the top. I then cut in a piece thin oak plywood over the hole. Many of the original metal tabs that were used to hold the original board in place were rusted out or broken. I used what was left. I sealed the plywood to the metal keeping the plywood inside of the inner metal lip. I then drilled and used pop rivets (used washers on them so that they do not pull through the wood). Then I ran a bead of sealant between the inner metal lip and the plywood. I then glued 1/4" closed cell foam onto the plywood (it must be closed cell as it will not absorb water). At that point I glued a piece of vinyl to the closed cell foam and wrapped it over the inner metal lip and trimmed it so it covered about half of the bottom of the trough between the inner metal lip and the roof. I then glued in the rubber retaining piece. Vintage Power Wagon has or at least had the rubber to do this.

You can use canvas in the top using the same process that I did. I would then seal it with a paint to make sure it does not leak. I would use a modelers dope if you can find it.
