Leaving out the "carbon footprint" of building the car and delivering it to your driveway, and only counting the CO2 it emits while you drive it is like figuring that the dollar cost of your house is only utilities and taxes, and assuming that the house didn't cost anything to buy. Put some honest accounting into the "carbon footprint" calculations and none of the current green fads would look nearly so good.

If you want to see all the green fads collected in one place, look at Seattle where the mayor banned plastic grocery sacks (in Seattle, paper made out of actual live trees is apparently "greener" than a few milligrams of prehistoric hydrocarbons), tried to ban camp fires on the city beaches on account of their CO2 emissions (every piece of wood that ever grew, if it didn't turn into coal, either burned or rotted, releasing all its carbon into the air, but he doesn't know that), closed neighborhood streets randomly just so people would enjoy how good it feels to not have cars on them, and required recycling of even food waste just because recycling is good no matter what the hassle and expense of it, and is junking a large number of functional sodium-vapor street lights to replace them with LEDs.

By the way, I don't give any of those on-line "carbon footprint" calculators any credence at all. They leave out all kinds of obvious stuff.
