Answer to the first part of your question - yes you use #6 to set the TDC position, that's why the plug is there. #1 & #6 have the same offset on the crank so they will always be in line with each other. Use the depth gauge to get TDC and put a new mak on the pulley to line up with the pointer. Next with the plug removed put a small rolled up bit of paper in the hole, then when you wind the motor over the paper will blow out on the compression stroke - when that happens slowly continue to rotate the engine clockwise until your mark lines up again and you should be on #1 timing position. See the other post about static timing and you should be able to get it going. You may have to retime the oil pump to get it "correct" but the engine doesn't care where the rotor is pointing as long as it creates spark to the right plug at the right time. If the pump/distributer is not in the correct position you just need to make sure the #1 plug wire lines up with the rotor position when the crank timing is right.
