I checked it out. The exhaust valve does open on the copression stroke like your mechanic stated thereby releasing the energy that would have been there to help push the piston down. They state approx 500 psi with turbo plus compression. It appears it is the lack of energy and not just vaccuum that creates the breaking (I think haha)
