My fenders were already a botched repair job, so I had no thought about spot rivets.

But at least I did prime the inner surfaces before setting the rivets. I'm sure the hot rivets burnt it a bit, but it was more primer than Dodge did.

There is a 'weld through primer' sold at welding suppliers. Mostly zinc I'd guess, I suppose a bit of heat merely makes the surfaces galvanized. I didn't discover it until I had all the patches welded into the truck.
