Thats why a leak down test instead of compression test works nicely. It also give you much more information for troubleshooting. Put a PSI into the cylinder (like 80psi) and see what the cylinder holds (like 75psi). You can then put an ear to the exhaust to check for air leakage(valves), or oil filler tube (rings). Turn the engine with a ratchet and socket on the crank pully to find TDC of said cylinder.
A word of caution: Be sure to remove the ratchet before applying air, in case your not quite at TDC.
This is the way we airplane mech's do it.
