Yes, I hear that Steve. I always laugh when I see the old nos military shoes for sale. I bought a set years ago & the lining was so hard that I think my truck sped up when I hit the brakes :)
We have a local brake shop I use & I always ask for the softest lining they have. My 71 D300 also has 4 wheel drums...the brakes not only are not a problem but my problem is that the biased tires make it like driving on ice, they lock up so easy.
I understand wanting discs in serious mud or severe braking conditions but not for lack of braking when you have shoes & drums the size of our trucks.
