Hello Robert:

If memory serves me correctly, Most bellhousings from 1968 back that had the hydraulic clutch and direct drive starter were a HUGE cast iron affair that was drilled for the 3 speed, 4 speeds, and the NP540....As well as being drilled for the separate trannies, they also were drilled and cast for the different engine sizes like the slanter, the smallblock A and LA engines and the B-RB enginess. Some may have been drilled for the flatheads too...cant recall on that one. This bellhousing is HUGe and probably weighs almost as much as a NP435 does! This is the older 'universal' bellhousing. Now From 69 on, each engine family had a different bellhousing bolt pattern. The slanters were separate, the smallblock were separate and big block were separate. No more universal. They used these into the early 90's with later ones being made from Aluminum. I dont have a casting number, BUT the slant six pattern looks like about 2/3rds of a Smallblock pattern, but with the starter mounting on the upper driver's side. Well...I think thats all for now. Best to you!
