It may have been done for the radio as you suggest. Around the time this truck was used there were a lot of radio's and electrical service equipment made negative earth and unless the whole casing was insulated, they would short out. If the truck was converted (if memory serves) you hook up the battery the "wrong" way around, polarise the regulator to suit and swap the coil leads and that's about it. Check coil leads to see which terminal goes to distributor, if - then it's been done on purpose, if it's + then assume someone put the battery in backwards. If this is the case you will need to re-polarise the regulator when you fit it up correctly. Cheers.
