I've experienced a similar problem and the battery had a sick cell, so wouldn't retain full charge and that made the generator work overtime. Replaced the battery after going through the regulator, generator and wiring, then testing the battery with a hydrometer. When I did the cell discharge test the sick one gave off a heap of gas and bubbles. The sick battery was used for another 12 or so months as a test battery before it died completely. May not be the problem, but worth checking before you overhaul everything else.
