Best advice I ever heard is to give it a taste test. Old oil gets as bitter as brake fluid. New oil is undistinguishable from Crisco. No taste, just an oily feel on the tongue. The acids in the rancid oil dissolve bearings, so change it before then.

Every couple years sounds good to me, whether it need it or not. That is NOT what oil salesmen will tell you.
