Joe
your Route Van is equipped with a Fluid Drive
i doubt if many have even seen on or know how
they function 70year old technology
same with overdrives - very common in the 40's & 50's to allow vehicles with lower gear ratios (high numerical) to travel at highway speeds.
was not uncommon to install on "Hot Rods" of the era to get the same effect. 4.11s or 4.44s for off the line and an overdrive unit
for crusing
none of these technologies are taught anymore and can only be found in old text books.
trying to get increased highway speed with larger dia tires (& wheels) is not the way to
go when OD units (wrecking yards) from 40's &50's chrysler products are still available
and most should have the long input shaft that was used with fluid drives.
I imagine that the route van with 22.5 tires & wheels would be almost impossible to stop
at highway speeds as the increased mass at the increased radius (from axle center) would be like a flywheel. Would certainly require brake system update to what was used
on a full size truck using the same size tire & wheel.
just some things to think about
ps: my friends and I put an continental 6 along with an overdrive unit in a 48 jeep truck that we drove from SF Bay area to BC & Alberta in the summer of 61
yes it was a 4wheel drive (we had free wheeling front hubs)
