I think I am reading that the lights on the actual turn signal switch do not work, but the actual outside turn signals do work ?

If this is true, two things come to mind;

1. There is only one light bulb in the turn signal switch assembly. When you move the lever for a turn, you also move a metal window that allows the indicator light to shine thru either the right or left green indicator. If yours is a newer 900, there is also a 4 way position that allows the light to shine thru a red window. Its very possible that the bulb in the turn switch is burned out

2. Power to the indicator lamp is provided thru the blue wire that comes from the turn signal flasher (mounted separate from the switch) the blue wire goes to the "P" terminal on the flasher. You may have a bad flasher. Put a volt meter, one lead to ground, the other lead to the P terminal on the flasher. Then actuate the turn signal switch lever for a right or left turn, if the flasher is OK, you will see 12 volts go on and off as the lights flash. Then go to the Lever Switch and see if you see the same thing at the Lamp.
