When the plug is missing, there is higher air pressure coming in the spark plug hole than there is in the intake manifold. So ambient air gets pushed in through the plug hole, not air/fuel mix. Just like with those plug hole air compressors. Problem lies in tooo much air coming in, and then on through the open intake valve, into the manifold, where it causes the rest of the cylinders to run lean. Next cylinder in the firing or1der would be the one to suffer grief.
