I use leather gloves and try to stay 3 or 4 feet away from the fair leads. But another option I have used is a heavy rag with some oil on it. It cleans and oils the cable as it winds in and is easy to let go of if it snags on a piece of wire. Whatever works, as long as common sense is involved. Obviously if you are using bare hands, you probably have calloused hands and you probably aren't going to grip the cable tightly as it runs through your hands.
