Same here. I work in the elevator trade where we obviously use lots of wire rope in the 7/16 and 1/2" range, lots of power hoisting and rigging, and all-in-all, a lot of dangerous situations on a moment-by-moment basis. I know of quite a few people that had complacency cost them big time. Accidents with rope in our trade are usually game-changers for the people involved.

Same with winching on the side of a hill, and the rope with the pinching hazards are just part of the deal. The other side of using gloves when winching is that you may get the extra grabbing power when you absolutely need it, instead of that sliver from a broken strand in a lay. The argument works both ways.

Everyone I jeep with wears gloves when possible, and everyone I jeep with has a very healthy respect for the pinching hazards winches, straps, and cables present. These are in situations where survival is in the balance, as opposed to stump pulling, log hauling, or a another labor-saving way of winching when things aren't so critical moment-by-moment.

I think the message is clear, and that's all that was need for the guy that had the original question; using a winch is something that can become very dangerous real quickly... even something as simple as re-spooling after the winching is finished.
