First of all, I need to apologize... I thought we were talking about wenching, not winching.
Between jeeping, hoisting, and rigging, I can't count the miles of rope that's gone through my hands, and I wouldn't think about doing it without a nice worn-in pair of gloves. I'd be real careful with a new pair though, and you really need to learn & work with someone who's done it before, if you want to be able to count to 10 when you're done. I know of plenty of accidents from people that thought they were pro's, both from jeeping, and in industry.
