If the person said he had bad luck with stuff that old, that is really code language for, "I have no idea what I am doing when I work on DC generators." Better to just stay away from that shop.
You don't indicate where you are located, but there should be any number of charging system component repair shops in your area that are quite capable of working on your generator.
They are not difficult to repair; certainly no more so than a typical starter.
