stub getter outter

Is there anyone out there that has found a easy way to remove a broken axle stub from the carrier? I don't want to tear down the carrier assembly if I don't have to. I was getting ready to load on the trailer and broke the short side axle on my 58 FF. the hoghead is out and lying on the bench but the stub will not fall out. can I weld a bolt or something to it and pull it out that way? Dave.
