TEL was first manufactured in the 20's by a partnership involving GM, Delco, standard oil and dupont. The valves were hardened because of the lead. The lead reduced knocking which allowed greated compression however, small particles of lead would burn through the valves. It also fouled up the spark plugs. This was eventually overcome by the use of lead scavengers in fuel EDB and EDC. Try this link fot more info. Tex
