Well, I just recently freaked out thinking the worse on my 79 W150, but it turned out to be the front drive shaft CV joint assembly. Have that rebuilt before you tear into the TC. It actually caused the Tc to make all sorts of noises in the different ranges, and I thought i was a gonner.
But, had the shaft rebuilt by A-1 Driveshaft (located throughout the country) for $159.00 delivered, and all the noises stopped!
Otherwise, find a new one. They cost too much to rebuild. Fortunately for you and I, most people don't like the full time 4x4 and pull them out in favor of a part time set up, so they are plentiful, and usually low milaged! And the price is right! Usually free!
