I know the rear axle is centered on a WC 3/4 ton. What about the WDX/WM300? A centered rear axle would allow me to run off the e-brake shaft on an M37 transfer case. Out of curiosity, will an M37 differential fit into a 1/2 ton axle and mate up to the axle shafts?

How is the WC 3/4 ton axle for strength compared to the WDX/WM300 and M37?

As for the post asking why change out the 1/2 ton axles for M37, the reason is I'm just kicking around ideas for a future project.

I'll have a complete set of M37 running gear left over, and I have two 1/2 ton WC's to make one good truck. I don't care for the 1/2 ton brake drums, since you have to remove the hubs and expose the bearings when doing brake work. Thus if mud gets into the drums, and you need to clean them out, you've got a sensitive area exposed. The M37 axles would get around this, as would going to four disc brakes by Helitool. I'm not going to be getting into this project until after my first M37 is done, but I do want to save some parts and sell others and am just making a game plan.

It would apper that the best choice, though not the cheapest, would be to put four Helitool disc brakes on the 1/2 ton axles and install an M37 transfer case. I think, though, that the M37 axles are tougher for off road abuse.

And for purists, my 1/2 ton WC's are missing way too much to make a resto worthwhile. I would consider a resto only if I obtained a better truck or found a Command Car body for my CC frame.

But who knows, things might change by the time my M37 is done. I'm real tempted to send all the extra stuff down the road and get an ambulance and use it for camping.
