If this is your first attempt stick with a system. in other words same brand paint and thinners. I like (PPG) paints.(DITZLER). they make a good epoxy primer (DP90). comes in grey, black, green. When mixed with the catalyst it can be sprayed immediately. Put paint on in 30 minutes or wait up to 7 days without re-sanding. For paint they make a semi-gloss olive drab(#DAR45748).uses a hardener also. Don't know if it matches military but i like it. another (lusterless olive drab #46118. i put a glossing agent in this paint to make it shiny. Very easy to keep clean. you could do the same to any of these flat paints.the primer is about $140 a gallon including catalyst. the paint $120 a gallon. the epoxy primer at times would almost lift the original finish where it was sanded through. for this reason I sandblasted my whole truck before painting. took about 3 gallons of paint plus thinner and hardener to paint my M37 inside and out completely disassembled. thats a lot of paint but its a lot of metal when you paint both sides of everything.hope this helps. Buy a quart of paint to make sure you like it and experiment before you begin the final job. Took two gallons of primer . 1 coat of primer is all that is needed.
