You need a dwell/tach meter and with the engine running(and reving) the needle on the meter should not move. In your case, it should move around quite a bit on the scale.Yes, the bearings can be changed(if you have the right equipt) but I found it easier to buy a rebuilt distributer from the auto parts store.
