I have a similar situation with five acres and my own outdoor pistol range. The neighbors have not complained so far about occasional centerfire pistol shooting or even high power rifle, but I do not push it. Most days I only shoot six shots of 22 pistol, then dry fire an additional 66 times by rotating the empty casings after every three hits in a revolver.

It is absolutely a grand idea to get in as much practice as possible with your carry gun, with the same ammunition you carry. That being said, I know of not one single person who has gotten truly good at pistol shooting without having expended a significant quantity of 22 lr. Not only is it less expensive, the low noise and recoil allow you to correct bad habits.

As for the mechanics of shooting being basically the same, I will go you one better. I am now a much better shot with any handgun or rifle I may pick up because of the trigger control and sight alignment lessons learned with the pistol. In the long range match mentioned earlier, I not only hit the targets well with my own 44 mag, but also with a borrowed 454 Casull and a 41 mag, for a total of nine shots fired with three different revolvers resulting in four hits on a 10" steel disk at 270 yards.
