my next step is to jack it up and check things. I thought at first that it was probably in the t-case because it seemed like it just wasn't engaging. it sounds like I may have bigger problems than I thought.
this may be unrelated but at the same time the 4x4 quit, the steering got hard spots in it. I wonder if this is related. doesn't the axle move in and out slightly when you turn? If an axle snaps, I could see how it could screw with the steering if this is the case. just a hunch.
