I thought they only put the door-mounted spares on ambulances. As I understood it, all the pickup-type trucks had the spare mounted in the bed, using the same cast-iron spinner but a different bracket, and the service-body trucks (contact maintenance and ?) had a pocket in the bed bed behind the cab to stow the spare in. Wasn't '52 the first year the government bought M37s? So, are you saying they later on moved the bed-mounted spare to the door? That door-mounted spare on the M43 is the only dumb thing in the design of the whole M-series of trucks as far as I'm concerned. They could have at least put it on the passenger side. If they moved the regular M37 spare from the bed to the driver's door in later production, I'm surprised, since it should have been obvious by then with the M43s that it was a bad idea.
