Yes, I can see the reason for it with a breaker bar. I'm thinking the 12-point "standard" is a holdover from the days of very coarse ratchets. I actually think they've gone too far the other way with fine-toothed ratchets nowadays -- they strip out too easily, especially if they get even a little bit of dirt in them. I guess the bottom line is that both have their place, and a well-equipped shop should have a full set of both 6 and 12 point sockets.
