My auto body guy who does any accident repair to my cars was upset the other day. His shop rates are set buy the insurance companies. He can not charge more. Most shops depend on insurance work to survive. He stated that the auto mechanical repair shop across the street is not controlled and they get a better hourly rate. I kind of agree that is is price control at the business level. Those insurance companies are there to make money (don't forget that) and they cut and keep their expenses down with some pretty strong tactics.

Not sure why someone would subject themselves to those low rates. But I guess there is not enough business in non-insurance work and custom cars to keep in business.

I really have a bad taste in my mouth when I go into some of the RV stores around here. They charge over $100/hour for any work they do. Some smaller shops are more sane in their prices. It seem to be the places that sell the big boys that charge that much but then they also charge that for camper or trailer work also. I found $100/hour a little steep for putting a new vent in a trailer a little to high to say the least.

A good painter is worth a lot and can charge a lot when doing show cars. But few can get into that high price market as is it limited in size and most are not good enough painters.
