I used to live and work 100 feet from the tracks. Many cars go by doing the thump-thump-thump. I figured it is from locking up the brakes, and the skid against the track wearing off the wheel. Or maybe it was a soft spot from the factory?

My brother went across the country in a car with a flat spot. The bump-bump-bump shook loose his first kidney stone. When he was hauling his daughter's stuff up to her dorm, he thought his back was bad. An x-ray showed the stone. Dr. gave him a strainer to pee through. On the trip back, in another car with the thump-thump-thump, it jarred loose the stone, came out with a PLOP.
