The shaft wear can cause your truck to run rough and even back fire if it is worn too much. Without changinging distributors you could rebuild it and insert new bushings.

The location of #1 plug wire will not make any difference to the engine as long as when #1 piston is at TDC of the compression stroke you put the #1 plug wire where the rotor is pointing. You can change the #1 plug wire physical location on the cap by adjusting the slot in the oil pump that accepts the distributor shaft. Remove the oil pump and reisert it to where you want the dist cap to line up.

It should not be a problem to get your adjusting plate within range to time your engine. Many times this plate is installed upside down and simply flipping it over will solve this problem.

It is very easy to swap parts. If it fits it will usually work. Don't be afraid to experiment as there is not much you can harm if it doesn't.
