Must have been the plunger still in the bore that kept the oil from draining out. No matter, it's easy enough to suck it out and swab out the sludge. I have a good big oil sucker that does the whole thing in two snorts. No drain plug on mine. This wasn't really a problem -- I just couldn't figure why the oil wasn't draining back. Now it's obvious that of course the plunger is staying in place without any oil pressure to push it out.
I've already read how hard it is to find new elements that fit, so I'll just keep the old one for now. I tend to think we're too quick to replace filters anyway. I've torn a few miscellaneous ones apart now and then just to see what's in them, and there's rarely all that much in the way of metal particles or anything worse than dirty oil.
